A swollen or inflamed prostate is called prostatitis. Prostate enlargement is relatively common in men as they age, and the medical term for the condition is benign prostatic hypertrophy or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
BPH is characterized by an increase in cells, which ultimately form large nodules that compress the urethra, hindering the flow of urine and causing a lot of pain. While this does not usually happen until later in life (typically above 40 years of age), more than 50 percent of men in their 60’s and up to 90 percent in their 70’s and 80’s have reported symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland. In some cases, the condition can be caused by bacterial infection when the bacteria being transported in the urine penetrate into the prostate gland. In any case, there are some effective natural home remedies you can use to counter prostate enlargement.
1. Saw Palmetto
This is an herbal remedy derived from a certain palm tree that has been used for centuries in traditional medicine to ease urinary symptoms, including those associated with an enlarged prostate. A few small-scale studies conducted by the National Institute of Health (NIH) have shown that Saw Palmetto can be effective at countering BPH symptoms. It is safe and does not lead to any severe side effects.
This is basically a mixture of several different plants containing cholesterol-like substances known as sitosterols. Beta-sitosterol has been shown to treat urinary symptoms of prostate enlargement, including the flow of urine. The remedy has not been associated with any serious side effects, although its long-term effects have not been established yet.
